Background: A clinical syndrome Transverse Myelitis (TM) causes neural injury to the spinal cord, resulting in varying degrees of weakness, sensory alterations, and autonomic dysfunction. Depression is remarkably prevalent in TM and is largely independent of the client’s degree of physical disability. Psychiatric social work and medication management can have benefits in order to improve mood state and anxiety.
Aim: The present study was aimed to manage depression of person with Transverse Myelitis (TM) using strength-based cognitive behavioural therapy. Methods and materials: Present study used a single subject case design and compared pre and post-intervention baseline data that following psychiatric social work intervention. Case was referred from Center for Rehabilitation, LGBRIMH, Tezpur. Psychiatric social work assessment using semi-structured clinical and socio-demographic data sheet, social history Proforma, Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Family Assessment Device (FAD). Based on the assessment, psychiatric social work intervention supportive counseling, cognitive behavioral case work intervention, relaxation techniques, and coping skills was provided to the client and family members.
Results: Psychiatric social work intervention showed a significant difference in the pre and post-test scores in the symptom of depression and anxiety.
Conclusion: Case study using strength-based CBT approach gives a better understanding in dealing with a neurological condition like Transverse Myelitis (TM). Interventions based on strength-based CBT approach can be effective in clinical set up especially neurological conditions.
